Earth Day is an annual celebration held around the world on April 22nd.
Earth Day was designed to highlight the intrinsic value and fragility of our planet, and to encourage the protection of Earth’s precious resources. First celebrated in 1970 at the suggestion of activist John McConnell, Earth Day is now a United Nations-sanctioned holiday observed in 192 countries each year.
An idea born out of a troubled time, Earth Day and related events serve as a time to focus on the environment, its current problems, and the challenges we face if we are to solve them. But, most importantly, it’s a time to start changing how we treat our planet!
National Arbor Day is an annual celebration held around the country on the last Friday in April.
Globally, Arbor Day celebrations have been documented as far back as 1594. One early champion of Arbor Day, a Spanish priest, promoted it as a means of recognizing “the importance of trees for health, hygiene, decoration, nature, environment and customs.” The first Arbor Day celebration in the U.S. was held in Nebraska on April 10, 1872, when an estimated one million trees were planted in the state. Since then, Arbor Day has grown into a national movement, celebrated every year in every state.
